The lack of detailed company information on Disney’s corporate site creates unnecessary risks

The feature

Disney’s global corporate website has five primary sections – ‘About’, ‘Investor Relations’, ‘Careers’, ‘Social Responsibility’ and ‘News’.

The Social Responsibility section is rich, with eight subsections.

In contrast, the About section has just two ‘subsection’ links – ‘Leadership’ and ‘Our Businesses’ – which lead, on click, to different parts of the About landing page, rather than to deeper pages.

The Leadership area consists of biographies of executives and directors. The Our Businesses area is made up of a series of panel links to subsidiary sites – which are often customer-focused rather than designed to serve corporate audiences.

There is no other substantive information about the company in the About section – aside from a one-paragraph mission statement and, buried at the bottom of the About page where it is easily missed, an illustrated history timeline.

The takeaway

From jobseekers and journalists to investors and regulators, audiences are demanding more transparency than ever from companies about who they are and what they do. Yet Disney fails to provide rounded, detailed company information in its About section – or elsewhere – on its global corporate site.

This is damaging for the company in three ways.

First, it is likely to frustrate visitors coming to the site to learn more about the company.

Second, it undermines efforts to convey the impression that Disney has a corporate culture of openness and transparency.

Third, it means that investors, journalists, politicians and others are likely to resort to Wikipedia and other sources beyond Disney’s control to get the information they need. This is risky at any time – and particularly so at times like now, when the company finds itself on the front line of a high-profile political battle.
