Home Depot : Making a statement on Covid precautions

Mali Perdeaux
A new icon panel on job descriptions explicitly sets out ‘Covid precautions’ to reassure candidates.

The feature
US home improvement giant Home Depot has recently added a new icon panel to its job description pages which explicitly sets out ‘Covid precautions’.
The panel sites alongside a similar set outlining benefits; both use clear graphic icons to summarise the details in a clear and engaging format.
We checked corporate, shop floor and distribution roles, and all the vacancies we found carried the Covid panel.
The takeaway
This is the first example we’ve seen of corporate job descriptions explicitly addressing what is likely to be a key question from potential employees.
Home Depot’s policies are likely to reassure candidates and their extended families if they live in one household – graduate applicants may have concerned parents, for example. It also sends a message to customers that, by looking after staff, the company is looking after them. Other stakeholders are likely to appreciate the transparency. The panels are also notably well executed from a design point of view.
In addition, on the evidence of Home Depot’s social media feeds, some potential candidates may decide not to apply due to the company’s policy on mask-wearing, saving resources in filtering through ultimately incompatible applications.
