Anglo American : Adding a personal voice to job descriptions

Mali Perdeaux
A video introduction adds a new dimension to online job descriptions.

The feature
Some of the job descriptions in Anglo American’s online careers section have short video introduction from a member of the HR team.
Presented in an overlay panel and listed under a ‘Videos to watch’ heading towards the bottom page, these provide context and background to the role, inviting potential candidates to read the job description for further details.
The takeaway
Adding a human face and voice to job descriptions can be a powerful tool to inform and engage candidates. We have seen sites incorporate short video employees alongside job ads, and recently noted a recruitment company posting similar short video job descriptions on Instagram. However, this is the first time we have seen a major company bring these trends together and incorporate a video summary on a corporate site to bring a refreshing new dimension to the traditional job description.
Although unlikely to be relevant for all vacancies, when used appropriately this approach can add impact as well as providing useful insights about potential colleagues, the working culture, and environment.
The video would have even more impact if presented at the head of the page, leading in to the more comprehensive written description.
