The feature

The IBM ‘Jobs Blog’, hosted on WordPress and run by four people in the recruitment department, is a frequently updated and well-populated online resource providing ‘an insider view’ of the company for potential IBMers (what employees at the company call themselves).

The home page has a steady feed of stories including employee profiles, tech trends, career tips, etc. A carousel across the top of the page has featured posts from the last several weeks, giving an immediate flavour of the kinds of content readers can expect. The eight categories in a primary navigation bar (which ‘sticks’ to the top of the page in desktop view as readers scroll) are immediately relevant for jobseekers – IBM news, Meet IBMers, Students, Women at IBM, etc.

The takeaway

IBM’s jobs blog demonstrates many examples of best practice in blogging: a clear mission stated on the ‘About’ page; regular and relevant posts; interesting headlines; clear writing; and useful categories. The tone is informal but professional.

Blogs are good places to talk about less ‘corporate’ issues. The ‘Women at IBM’ section for example, collates a number of profiles and first-person pieces by women employees, such as ‘Advice to my younger self’. The blog also has puzzles and content targeting people who like computers and lateral thinking.
