Valmet : Blogging for investors

Investors can benefit from the informality of a blog, but the IR team must commit to regular updates.

The feature

Valmet, the Finland-based pulp, paper and technology company that was spun off from Metso Group in 2013, has a blog for investors, written by its IR director.

Recent posts have covered Valmet’s role in sustainable textile production, the Q1 results that ‘surprised the market positively’ and ‘key messages from the Capital Markets Day’.

The takeaway

A blog is a flexible format for communicating qualitative information to investment professionals, trade journalists and others following the company from an investment perspective. It's also a neat way of communicating openness, transparency and a commitment to 'go the extra mile' in efforts to keep investors informed.

The problem, as with all blogs, is that once you've set one up, you've committed your team to the burden of updating it regularly.

Valmet's success on this front is mixed: they usually manage at least one post a month - though were obviously too busy with other things between end of last October and early February. Perhaps this time burden is why the vast majority of IR teams give blogging a miss.
