Corporate Social Responsibility (usually ESG these days) was born at pretty much the same time as the world wide web – and their growth has been linked. ‘Websites are good at handling complexity, and CSR is complex,’ we said in 2003. Conversely, CSR has made corporates websites more important as business tools. We’ve spent a lot of time tracking how well companies present their non-financial data, but back then we were also worrying about something that is still too relevant: how to make social responsibility seem remotely interesting.
