Welcome to the Bowen Craggs web effectiveness blog. Why are we so late jumping on the blog bandwagon? Well, we did have an experiment before and we pulled it for the same reason most people should avoid blogs: we didn’t have time to give it the attention it needed. There are few things sadder online than a blog that has been born, enthusiastically nurtured for a while, then ignored – it’s like a plant that has been planted, watered, fertilised, then allowed to go curly at the edges and eventually rot.

There are blogs that flourish without a huge amount of effort from their propagators – they have become discussion areas, living off the comments that flow in, in some ways more like a forum than a blog.

But actually here aren’t that many of them. Look at the Greenpeace blog . Lots of interesting posts – the one I’m looking at has pictures taken of a Greenpeace ‘action’ against the world’s largest tuna fishing ship. Engaging stuff, but it has only three comments, none of which add to the story (one of them is ‘It makes me sick’). Look at Dell’s Direct2Dell, which has had enormous publicity and is I gather very popular – the latest five posts have attracted five comments between them. If these organisations – which have huge numbers of engaged followers – can’t get much interaction on their blogs, what hope do the rest of us have?

These blogs, and pretty much all the others, are kept going by the hard work of one or more people – they are not really about ‘conversation’, to pick a word of the moment. That doesn’t make them any less valuable however.

So we promise to put in the hard work to make this blog as interesting as possible. It will not replace our two-weekly Website Effectiveness newsletter, nor the twice-weekly BC Tips. If you would like to comment, please do, and it will be terrific if we do get some interesting discussions going.
