Careerchoices: Giving a strong sense of direction
An unusually strong sense of direction on a non-transactional site.
The Site
A site supported by all the major players in the UK food and grocery industry and run by the Institute of Grocery Distribution. The site aims to explain and promote careers in the industry rather than acting as a job centre.
The Takeaway
It is unusual to find such a strong sense of direction on a non-transactional site.
Journeys from the home page allow advice seekers to begin searching based on who they are, rather than assuming that they know what they are looking for: “I am a school leaver who wants to know more”, “I know very little about the industry” etc. Each leads through to further choices, and so to more detailed information. The site also tries to put itself in the heads of potential jobseekers by offering tips on how to get jobs. For example, Swot Up provides links to other food sites, pointing out that a knowledge of the industry will impress potential employers.
